A call for info...

Part of the reinventing me process involves actually taking action on skills and hobbies I have wanted to improve. I am thinking about getting myself and early Christmas present and upgrading my camera beyond the average point and shoot. Anyone out there have any ideas of a good beginner camera body that is fairly idiot proof and can be upgraded (lenses, etc.) as I learn? I know for a fact that some of you out there happen to be amazing photographers...

See! Great subject matter, crummy camera!

Give a girl a hand!

  1. How much are you willing to spend?? There are a lot of great SLR cameras out there, but they can get pricey, but I would say in the long run it is worth the purchase, I love my nikon and would never go back to a point and shoot. I have a nikon D40x but their most recent one is a D90 (I think) more megapixels, and a lot more expensive. Pentax is a good brand too and Canon. If you decide on a nikon I can give you more info just email me or fb.

  2. Well, my dear cousin, since you ask. I doubt that you or many know that I've been involved in a photography business for some time. Our photos are published in National Figure Skater in each issue. I have some what to say on the matter. Emily mentioned the Nikon which is a GREAT camera but I prefer the Canon. The new T1i is under 1000, is a digital SLR, upgradeable lenses, fast frame rate, HD Video capable, weather proof body...etc etc. In a perfect world I'd have the T1i, with a Nikon lens (its tough to beat Nikon glass, I dont care who you are). But overall for the price and performance I think the Canon is the way to go. Its also got some EXCELLENT capability for shooting in the dark without a flash (a la school plays etc..I"d be happy to show you some stuff). Call or email me anytime and I'd be happy to teach you anything. See you Sat. afternoon!

  3. I just bought myself the Canon Rebel XSi (it's just one step below the T1i), love it. It's as basic as you want it to be, but you can get fancy with it, big lenses, etc. Do it! You'll love it.

It is nice to just have a little camera too to stick in your purse so you'll always have it.

  4. I agree whole-heartedly with WendySUe. The Xsi is just a drop below the T1i, doesnt do video, and has some megapixel difference. So if you dont care about video, then the Xsi is avail for usually around 800 with a couple lenses.

  5. I have a cannnon, but I hear the Nikon's are amazing. We have the camera store here that you can get the used ones from.... and the new lenses that have the stability built in are amazing... :-)

I think people go with what they have always used... I like Nikon.

  6. I was shopping a year or two ago. I found the 'entry level" Cannon (I got the XT, but I think it is now the XS) and the Nikon (D40?) were pretty comprable review-wise.

I chose the Cannon because lenses and accessories were less expensive. I've loved it so far- basic enough for "point and shoot" but has enough features if I feel like gettin' fancy.
